email security

ok, so i must admit i'm rather happy to know security is an issue for email providers, but i thought my last experience was a bit much.

i was at my father's, visiting, and went to check my email. as i try to log on, i get a message telling me that it's been a while since i've logged in from this location. would i like to verify that this was, indeed, me? uh... in theory, this was all fine, but instead of asking me for, e.g. my secret question answer, they wanted my phone number to send me an SMS. why?? this was totally not on, as far as i was concerned. after despairing for 10 minutes, i realised that there was another option, a pretty lame one if i may say so, but at least something that'd give me access to my inbox, so i wasn't about to complain. still, i feel this is encroaching a little much on privacy and i am now seriously considering changing email provider.

the reunion

i'd told my friends i'd be in town Friday and Saturday. i was actually getting in Thursday evening but i couldn't see anyone trying to organise anything then. luckily, i checked my emails the day before leaving and found out some of my friends from summer school were organising a small reunion. did i want to come? hell yeah!

it was brilliant. we were 7 oldies, 2 of whom i hadn't seen in 19 years. 19 years. scary to think it's been that long. another 3 i hadn't seen in 14 years. in fact, only one had i seen regularly since finishing uni. it was really great seeing them all again. and it was like we were all 17 again and not a day had gone by. ok, so a couple had lost some hair and we all have some form of wrinkles, but seriously, we could have been back in our shared rooms. the personalities, the sense of humour, were the same.

after dinner, the 5 of us that were left went to a bar. we talked until 1.30am. i had no voice left but i didn't care. i was having so much fun. as the bar closed, though, i decided it was time to go. although L. really wanted to go dancing and K. seemed to be willing to follow her, i also had other people to see during my stay and i really needed some rest. but what an evening!

sugar overdose

i wasn't feeling really well. my father had kindly passed on his cold and after the windy day on Samsø, my sore throat was raging. my cousin made a pot of tea for breakfast and as everyone else drank coffee, i ended up drinking the whole pot. with all the sugar this entails (i like my black tea to be sweet).

i didn't notice, but my cousin made pot after pot, so that by the end of the day, i'd actually had quite a lot of sugar, too. i don't really eat that much sugar on a daily basis and most of my intake comes from fruit or, once in a while, chocolate or biscuits. so that's probably why, when i went to sleep, my body went into fits that seemed like seizures: my arms and legs shot out weirdly without much sense - and without me being able to control it all. it was odd and just a little scary. but as it didn't seem to otherwise affect me, i kind of pretended it wasn't happening and tried to keep sleeping. not an easy feat.

it hasn't happened since, so it presumably was a sugar overdose. it's made me quite wary of the stuff.
