slooow on the uptake

i was hosting my drinks last night. i went to introduce myself to a new arrival and it was weird: the handshake lasted a long time. i was wondering whether i'd get my hand back. not that it was unpleasant, quite the opposite. but still. i totally missed that first clue.

the guy apologised for not having signed up but showing up nonetheless. was i going to throw him out? uh...no. i said i could live with the situation. to which he responded i should have said i'd let him stay if he paid for a drink. second clue, missed.

as i was leaving, he insisted on air kissing me as we do to say hello and goodbye in Geneva. third clue...you get the picture. i can't really explain it, i think there was something missing, but i ended up kissing him twice instead of three times. but it's three times, here!, he exclaimed. so i kissed him a third time, after which he inquired as to whether he could find me on the network site. well, yes, as i organised the drinks, it wouldn't be too hard. then he repeated his name, which made me smile - part of my job is remembering names and he had made an impression so i didn't think i'd forget. and then he said something on the lines of he'd find me and get in touch. and that's when it hit me. slow on the uptake, definitely. although it was a particularly hot day and i was exhausted. the only motivating thing i could think of saying was 'see you soon, then!' which, i realise now, was perhaps on the scant side, but at least i said something.

the fish pedicure

for my birthday, i got a fish pedicure from 2 friends of mine. by the time we found a time we could all go, it was mid-June, but we finally made it. and what an experience!

after we'd washed out feet, we were led to three small separate pools of water teeming with tiny fish. as we put our feet in the water, we all had the same reaction: OMG! it felt a little like small amounts of electricity going through our feet. it was weird, and S. voiced her surprise with a scream, M. by pulling her feet back out. both of them were unconvinced by this (which is funny, seen as they were the ones who bought it) and seemed, for a minute, ready to leave. but then S. said they should at least sit it out - half an hour wasn't that long - and base their conclusions on the full session. and, little by little, we all got used to it, and even started joking about it.

the weird thing was that the fish didn't seem to concentrate on the areas of our feet that we thought they would concentrate on. but maybe we were expecting too much. our feet were definitely smoother when we got out, but you'd presumably have to do it regularly for calluses to disappear. a normal pedicure would have been more useful for that. but still, it was a fun experience!

the new gym

my membership for the gym i've been going to in Geneva finally came to an end. i say finally because a new gym had opened pretty much across from my place just after i'd signed up for the one in town, and not only was it closer to me, it was also cheaper and open every day, long hours. the membership finished on Wednesday so i made an appointment for Saturday morning at the new place.

the induction lasted about 30 mns, after which the guy told me i was free to leave. uh... i explained i was planning on working out, seen as i was there. he looked taken aback. but when was the last time i'd exercised, he asked, thinking it was going to be hard for me after 30 mns of chatting about my physical condition. uh...yesterday. oh. i'm not sure what he was expecting, but the fact that i exercised regularly clearly wasn't it. it was a bit weird.

it's the hair

i was wondering what had happened - it seemed that suddenly, i was getting a lot of male attention. guys were looking at me like i was suddenly the flavour of the month and stopping me in the street, telling me how beautiful i was. all very nice and flattering - and quite a boost to the self-esteem - but i couldn't see where it all came from, cos as far as i was concerned, i hadn't changed anything. except that i had. my hair. and then i remembered the very first time i got it cut to a bob. it was in New Zealand, and suddenly, out of nowhere, guys were buying me drinks and all. i couldn't figure out why, cos i'd just broken up with my boyfriend and was not in a very good or friendly mood, but i got lots of attention then and it's the same now, so it must be the hair.
