the eruptions
this isn't exactly new, but Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. even when i lived there (as in, no more than 5km from it), it would spew ash out on a regular basis, although nothing like what it's been doing since i left. apparently, it was really active last year - more than 1,000 'incidents', whatever that means - and it also erupted on Friday (see link below). at the same time, a dormant volcano in nearby Kirishima has erupted about 10 times since the beginning of the year, and the government is apparently considering an evacuation plan. so right now, out of all my friends, it seems that those who live the furthest from the earthquake epicentre might be the ones who are most at risk...
