home

how do you know you're home? by its smell. this of course, doesn't actually happen on a daily basis. you normally have to have been away for a while, on holidays or a business trip, for example. then, when you walk in, you realise that your house/apartment, has a very distinctive smell. and that's when you know you're home.
a friend of mine came over for dinner the other night. i've know her for years and she used to come by really often. as she was leaving, she started going from room to room. then she said 'it smells the same', and that it brought back memories. it was funny, and nice, that she would attach importance to it.
i work on smells a lot. they really remind me of places or situations. the other day, when it was really hot and summery outside, i walked into the basement, where it's always a lot cooler than the usual temperature. and the smell, as well as that temperature difference, really brought me back to earlier years (i've only just come back after 10 years away). it was like time travel.

That's true. You made me think about my very old friend. He is Yvan Obrist of Switzerland. He came to my place in India and stayed for a week near the beach. I was 16 year old then... Whenever I enter his place, I used to get a particular smell... He was using perfume. Now, whenever I get that smell, I remember him. He is not in contact with me now but your bog made me think about him. Thanks.

One of my best pal, told me that when I came to Dubai 'The smell of you Hari, reminding me our childhood!'. Well, it is true. We all carry a particular smell. Jagjit Singh sings like this "Tere ane ki jab khabar meheke, Saara jag meheke, sara ghar meheke..." May be he is telling about smell here... Cool.

I was wrong in quoting Jagjit's gazal! Sorry, I heard that gazal again. He says “Tere Ane ki jab khabar meheke, Teri khushbu se saara ghar meheke”. He clearly mentions about smell here. I don’t know if you can understand this (because your blogs says nothing about it…you are from NewYourk?). He says in Hindi as follows “[Oh, girl] When your arrival news blooms, your magnetic smell pervades through my entire house…” Isn’t that good? It is finest one from Jagjit. I am thinking of writing about him in my blog. Also, one of my best friends reminded me about Lankesh, an eminent author of Kennada. I am thinking about that….

Im originally from Florida, but the military had moved me to Clovis, NM. And after 2 1/2 years there in the dry, flat land, i had gotten so use to. As drove back home to Florida, just being able to smell the humidity, and the trees again almost brought tears to my eyes. I knew i was getting closer to home! :-)
